Hierarchical models represent data organized in a tree-like structure, where each record consists of one parent record and many children. It is considered the first database model developed by IBM in the 1960s.
In a hierarchical data model, the data structure is simple, but inflexible due to the one-to-many relationship. In these models, files are linked in a parent-child fashion. Each parent can reference multiple children, but each child is linked to only one parent.
