Quickbooks is an accounting software provided by Intuit for small businesses. Quickbooks is extremely popular in small and medium-sized businesses because it’s easy to use and has budget-friendly pricing plans.

Quickbooks makes it easy to perform profitability calculations and tax calculations through an intuitive interface. It can track and organize financial information, reduce manual data entry by a significant amount. It helps automate book-keeping, invoicing, time tracking, sales tax management, budgeting, bank reconciliation, and inventory management.

Quickbooks also provides utilities for accepting payments, payroll processing, time tracking, and inventory management. Quickbooks started as a desktop application and later joined the cloud bandwagon, with the most recent versions being entirely cloud-based.

This post is about the differences between two commonly used versions of Quickbooks — Quickbooks Pro vs Quickbooks Pro Plus.

Understanding Quickbooks’ versions

As of now, Qucikbook is available in two major versions — Quickbooks Online and Quickbooks Desktop. Intuit is now in the process of discontinuing Quickbooks Desktop altogether and moving to a purely cloud-agnostic model. A cloud-agnostic model has its obvious advantages — like subscription-based pricing models, anywhere available data, etc.

Quickbooks Desktop is only sold in a few countries, and you may be able to buy one, depending on your location.

Quickbooks Cloud is available in four plans – Simple Start, Essentials, Plus, and Advanced. The plans are priced according to the number of users supported by each of them and the additional features they provide. Quickbooks Cloud is available purely on a subscription-based model these days.

Quickbooks Desktop was used to be sold on a one-time license fee till a year back. This one-time license fee entitles the user to 3 years of use, after which the company retires the product. For example, if you are a user of Quickbooks Desktop 2019, you can use it till 2022. Quickbooks Desktop. While it was sold, Quickbooks 2021 came in three versions – Pro, Premier, and Enterprise.

In 2022, Quickbooks departed away with its one-time license fee-based sales altogether. So even in places where Desktop versions are still sold, Quickbooks is now sold based on subscription fees. Quickbooks Desktop 2022 is available in three versions – Pro plus, Premier plus, and Enterprise plus. Both Pro and Pro Plus support up to 3 users at a time.

Let’s begin with the Quickbooks Pro vs Quickbooks Pro Plus showdown.

Quickbooks Pro vs Quickbooks Pro Plus: Key Differences

One time purchase vs Subscription

The most critical difference between Quickbooks Pro and Pro Plus is that Pro is available for a one-time license-free. Pro Plus can only be purchased as a subscription. As of now, Quickbooks is pushing the Pro users to upgrade to Pro Plus. If you are a Quickbooks Pro user and do not want any support from Quickbooks, you can stay with the Pro version and not upgrade to Pro Plus.

Validity of the purchase

A one-time purchase of the Pro version entitles you to use the software for a maximum of 3 years. Pro Plus can be bought based on a monthly or yearly subscription, and usage rights terminate when you stop the subscription payment.

Additional features

Both Quickbooks Pro and Pro plus provide features for creating professional invoices, tracking sales and expenses, managing account payables, one-click sales, tax reports, etc. Beyond these basic features, the Pro Plus also supports sales tax tracking, inventory management, expense tracking, payroll services, etc. Pro Plus also comes with free automatic data backup.

The Pro Plus 2022 version is optimized for 64-bit execution. Quickbooks claim 38% faster execution of accounting tasks with the Pro Plus 2022 version. If your organization has got high-volume account book that requires long-running tasks, you may be better with Pro Plus.

Quickbook Mobile Access

The Pro Plus version comes with Quickbooks mobile application access. The mobile application helps to automate bill entries through its import feature. You can also attach documents to transactions by uploading them through the mobile application.

The Pro Plus version comes with free yearly product upgrades and security patches. The Pro version is locked to the version that you purchased, and an upgrade can only be done by moving to Pro Plus as of now. Pro Plus also gets first access to new features.

Quickbooks Support

The Pro Plus version comes with unlimited phone support in case you end up with problems or need help negotiating an organizational requirement. With the pro version, you are pretty much left with community support through the forums.

From the above comparison — Quickbooks Pro vs Quickbooks Pro Plus — it is evident that Quickbooks Pro Plus comes with many additional features but at the cost of moving to a subscription-based payment instead of the one-time payment.

Quickbooks Pro is a good option for a small and medium business that just needs robust accounting software and does not care about the latest and greatest features.

If you are already using Quickbooks Pro, you can continue using it till your 3-year window exceeds, after which you will have to move to Pro Plus. Considering the fact that Quickbooks is completely moving to cloud-based offerings, it may be better to move to Quickbooks Cloud at that point rather than moving to Quickbooks Pro Plus.

On another note, if your organization is a heavy user of Quickbooks, and wants to move your accounting data to your data warehouse for deeper analysis, you can checkout Hevo data.

Hevo provides an easy-to-use interface that can work with a variety of data sources and targets. Hevo supports complex transformations on the fly. Hevo’s simple UI and easy configuration ensure the lowest time to production for your ETL or business intelligence tasks.
